The Good And The Bad: Rating Liverpool’s Transfer Market Activity In January

Although Manchester City are clear frontrunners for back to back Premier League silverware, Liverpool have not given up the chase yet with 16 games remaining. The absence of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane could not derail their campaign and the Reds, likely to have all their options back in a few days time, should maintain the winning streak across competitions to stand a chance in the title race.

The Merseysiders were open to offers for a number of fringe stars. They could not offload all of them but, at the same time, pulled off a transfer masterclass by hijacking the Luis Diaz deal under Tottenham’s nose. Liverpool’s lethal attacking third is more menacing now, given the Colombian’s stellar show in Porto colours.

Incomings

The Reds were criticised for lack of spending when they had a quiet summer in terms of incomings. Ibrahima Konate added depth in the heart of the backline but the statement was missing from the owners compared to fellow title contenders who roped in an array of marquee names. The situation would have stayed the same last month, however, Spurs’ involvement triggered the board amid fears of losing a long-term target to league rivals.

Liverpool have Mohamed Salah running down the wing, whereas in-form Diogo Jota has become a first-team regular ahead of Roberto Firmino high up the pitch. Competition brings out the best from every individual and Mane, despite being one of Premier League’s most decorated wingers in recent years, must fight for his place now following Diaz’s arrival.

The Merseysiders were also close to striking a deal for Fulham sensation Fabio Carvalho, but the time ran out on the deadline day leading to a transfer collapse. Liverpool might still have him in their ranks on pre-contract and the youngster, too, is keen on joining Jurgen Klopp’s juggernaut.

Outgoings

Nat Phillips and Neco Williams joined Bournemouth and Fulham respectively for the remainder of the campaign. The club failed to find suitors for Divock Origi, Takumi Minamino and Loris Karius and therefore could not generate cash from player sales. It is to be seen now whether they manage to part ways with outcasts next summer.

Liverpool Transfer Rating: 7/10

It’s a win for Liverpool as they successfully completed the Diaz deal. Carvalho is out of contract in the summer, and therefore, eligible to pen a pre-contract any day now. Having said that, the Reds should have been more realistic with their valuation of fringe players.
