In a recent report, Sport claimed that Atletico Madrid centre-forward Alvaro Morata, who is currently playing on loan at Juventus, wants to join Barcelona. It is understood that the Spanish striker is eager to seal a move to the Catalan giants in the summer.
Morata’s Inconsistent Season In Italian Football
The 29-year-old has experienced an up and down campaign while on loan at the Allianz Stadium but has put in a series of fruitful performances as the spearhead of Juventus’ attack. Morata has participated in 33 matches for the Italian side this season, netting eight goals and providing six assists across multiple competitions.
The Madrid-born talent has led the line well for the Turin outfit based on his average of 1.6 shots, 1.4 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in Serie A. However, he needs to work on improving his link-up play in the opposition half after making 74.7% of his attempted passes in the Italian top tier (stats via whoscored).
Should Barcelona Get Morata On Board This Summer?
Morata excels at creating space for himself to get a few shots in on-target and has transformed himself into a good finisher in front of the opposition goal. He can even fashion a few inviting chances for others around him and is usually quite clever with his movements in and around the opponent’s penalty box. However, the Spaniard has to figure out a way to improve his link-up play and be more decisive in the final third.
At the moment, Barca has got Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Luuk de Jong and Memphis Depay as their centre-forwards. Hence, Xavi has no immediate need to sign a striker of Morata’s skill set as he has enough firepower in his arsenal at the Nou Camp.
However, the Spanish marksman could be a good option for the Catalan club if they decide to let Luuk de Jong leave at the end of this campaign. At 29, Morata has still got a few good years left in him and could help Barca challenge for some top honours over the next few years. All in all, Xavi should think about getting Morata on board as long as he is willing to play him often in the future.
