A disastrous Old Firm derby defeat on Wednesday night cost Rangers the leaders’ role in the Premiership standings. They had to uplift their game to stay in the hunt and defeat Hearts this evening at Ibrox. The Jam Tarts, being one of the most in-form sides, were supposed to cause more menace, but the return of Alfredo Morelos made all the difference as his brace ensured all three points. The Gers went on to increase the margin and registered a 5-0 victory in this crucial tie.
Below are the Rangers players rated in their commanding victory against Hearts.
Allan McGregor: 7
Nervy at times, the 40-year-old veteran had a commendable display after successive setbacks. Made some timely saves en route to securing a clean sheet from the last line of defence.
James Tavernier: 7
Made his trademark marauding runs, whipped in crosses and played his part in the attacking movements. Improved his defensive game with timely recoveries and tackles.
Connor Goldson: 8
Made a massive block towards the closure of the first half. Could have done better with his passing, particularly the long balls. But the Englishman delivered a headstrong display after last week’s shambles.
Leon Balogun: 8
Returned to the starting lineup to add more experience in deep defence. Made a number of key tackles along with clearances as well as interceptions to refrain the visitors from finding the net.
Calvin Bassey: 7.5
His energetic runs, cut insides and crosses exhibited his expertise as a left fullback. Played his part in the build-up of Morelos’ opener. Borna Barisic must wait for his chances now following a shambolic display versus Celtic at Celtic Park.
Ryan Jack: 7.5
Was handed a surprise start as a ‘number 6’. Injuries have hindered his progress in recent years, but the Scotsman showed his class by dominating the display from the middle of the park. Received plaudits while making way for Glen Kamara midway through the second half.
John Lundstram: 7.5
Although the Englishman is yet to settle in new surroundings, his box-to-box runs, pressing and ball-carrying traits helped Rangers control the midfield game for the majority of the contest. Made way for Steven Davis late in the game.
Joe Aribo: 7
The Nigerian depicted his class from an advanced midfield role. His late runs inside the box and the creative spark high up the pitch kept the away side on their toes all throughout the match. Got replaced by Fashio Sakala moments after Arfield’s goal.
Scott Arfield: 8
The veteran Canadian continues his scoring form as he found the net once again to make it 4-0 with 15 minutes remaining. Missed another great opportunity to score, but his work ethics deserve more acknowledgement and recognition. Left the pitch during the final quarter for Aaron Ramsey’s debut.
Ryan Kent: 8.5
Has been struggling of late, but the wide attacker showcased his mastery from the wide with a couple of assists before making way for Amad Diallo.
Alfredo Morelos: 9
El Bufalo is back in business after a frustrating spell with Colombia in the World Cup qualifiers. His brace helped the Light Blues earn a comfortable lead and push for more with half an hour remaining.
Rangers Subs Vs Hearts
Glen Kamara: 8
Scored a spectacular goal soon after coming on as a second-half substitute.
Fashion Sakala: 8
Sakala, too, made it count by firing in as a ‘super sub’.
Aaron Ramsey: 7
A good few minutes for the Wales maestro as he is expected to grab a start from the next gameweek onwards.
Amad Diallo: NA
Played too little to warrant a rating.
Steven Davis: NA
Played too little to warrant a rating.
