Aston Villa welcomed Leeds United at Villa Park earlier tonight as they looked to pick up a positive result at home. The Villans made a poor start to the game as they conceded the opening goal in the ninth minute when Daniel James got his name on the scoresheet with a good finish. However, the home team got themselves level on the scoreline at the half-hour mark when Philippe Coutinho found the back of the net with a low strike. Jacob Ramsey scored two quick-fire goals for Steven Gerrard’s side soon after but Daniel James pulled a goal back for Leeds just before the half-time break.
The Villans struggled to defend their narrow lead and conceded their third goal in the 63rd minute when Diego Llorente got his name on the scoresheet from close range. Ezri Konsa was sent off in the 87th minute as the Villans were held to a frustrating 3-3 draw in front of their home supporters.
Let’s take a look at how each Aston Villa player fared during the clash against the Whites.
GK: Emiliano Martinez – 6/10
The Argentine keeper made just one save in the game and won’t be pleased after letting in three goals during the 90 minutes.
RB: Matty Cash – 7/10
He was strong in the air and battled hard for every loose possession of the ball. Cash even made a key chance going forward.
CB: Ezri Konsa – 5/10
Konsa looked nervy at the back and let his teammates down by getting sent off in the 87th minute.
CB: Tyrone Mings – 7.5/10
The Villans centre-back made a lot of crucial clearances inside his half but could have done better to prevent some of Leeds’ goals during the game.
LB: Lucas Digne – 7/10
The French full-back did his fair share of defending but offered very little in the opposition half.
CM: John McGinn – 7.5/10
McGinn anchored the midfield with conviction for most of the game and made two good runs in the final third.
CM: Douglas Luiz – 6.5/10
The Brazilian talent struggled to get a foothold in the game but had two lively moments in the Leeds half.
CM: Jacob Ramsey – 8/10
He scored two quick-fire goals in the latter stages of the first half and secured the ball back a few times for his side.
RW: Emiliano Buendia – 7/10
The Argentine playmaker made two good runs with the ball but lacked the cutting edge in the final third.
ST: Ollie Watkins – 6.5/10
He fashioned some meaningful openings for his teammates but never looked like he would score.
LW: Philippe Coutinho – 9/10
The Brazilian playmaker caused all kinds of problems for the Leeds defenders in the first half. He lasted 77 minutes and came off the pitch with one goal and two assists to his name.
Substitutes:
CM: Carney Chukwuemeka – 6/10
He added some energy to Steven Gerrard’s midfield.
LW: Ashley Young – 6/10
Young made one good chance going forward.
CB: Calum Chambers – N/A
He didn’t get enough minutes to warrant a rating.
