Aston Villa locked horns with Newcastle United at St. James’ Park earlier today as they hoped to grind out a good result on their travels. The Villans made a poor start to the game as they conceded the opening goal in the 35th minute when Kieran Trippier scored with a deflected effort. Steven Gerrard’s men went into the half-time break 1-0 down on the scoreline.
The West Midlands outfit tried to mount a comeback in the second half but were lackluster in the final third. The contest ended with the Villans suffering a 1-0 defeat away at Tyneside.
Let’s take a look at how each Aston Villa player performed during the match against the Magpies.
GK: Emiliano Martinez – 6/10
The Argentine keeper made one save during the game but will be disappointed after conceding a first-half goal.
RB: Matty Cash – 6.5/10
Cash made two important defensive contributions and found some joy when getting forward down the right flank.
CB: Calum Chambers – 6.5/10
He made a few crucial clearances at the back and was a solid presence in the air.
CB: Tyrone Mings – 6/10
Mings earned possession back a couple of times for his team but won’t be pleased after allowing a goal in the first half.
LB: Lucas Digne – 6/10
The French full-back looked defensively vulnerable but deserves credit for creating two good chances in the final third.
CM: John McGinn – 7/10
McGinn provided some solid protection for his teammates at the back and was looking to make things happen with the ball at his feet.
CM: Douglas Luiz – 6/10
He struggled to get a foothold in the game at times and produced an uninspiring display at the centre of the park.
CM: Jacob Ramsey – 6.5/10
Ramsey helped his teammates out when needed and made two promising runs with the ball from midfield.
RW: Emiliano Buendia – 6.5/10
The Argentine sensation had some bright moments in the opponent’s half but didn’t do enough to register a goal.
ST: Ollie Watkins – 5.5/10
Watkins hardly got a sniff at goal and put in a lackluster display in the final third.
LW: Philippe Coutinho – 6.5/10
The Brazilian playmaker caused a few problems for the Newcastle defenders but there was no goal for him today.
Substitutes:
LW: Leon Bailey – 6/10
He offered very little after coming off the bench.
ST: Danny Ings – 6.5/10
The former Liverpool striker made two good runs with the ball.
CM: Carney Chukwuemeka – N/A
He hardly had any time to make an impact.
