According to a recent report by the Fichajes, Aston Villa are interested to sign the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum in the upcoming summer transfer window. The Dutch international who played five seasons with Liverpool recently moved to Paris Saint-Germain after the end of his contract with the Reds. Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz is reportedly linked with a move away from the Villa Park this summer as Steven Gerrard looks to bolster his midfield options. Aston Villa has also shown great pulling power in the transfer market in January with the signings of Phillipe Coutinho and Lucas Digne. With the 31-year-old already having a Liverpool connection, Steven Gerrard is likely to utilize it and bring him as a replacement in the summer.
Georginio Wijnaldum’s Lack Of Gametime At Paris Saint-Germain
The Dutch international moved to Paris Saint-Germain last summer after the end of his contract with Liverpool. Wijnaldum had a successful career with the Reds winning four trophies with the club including the Champions League and the Premier League. However, the transfer has not transpired as planned by Wijnaldum as he has struggled to make an impression with the French club. He has failed to nail down a place in the PSG first team and has struggled for minutes this season, with PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino preferring the likes of Marco Verratti, Danilo Pereira, Ander Herrera and Leandro Paredes ahead of him.
With the World Cup coming up as early as December 2022, the midfielder will want to have regular minutes under his belt at the club. Since PSG have not preferred him, it becomes more likely that Wijnaldum can move to Aston Villa next summer.
Right Choice For Gerrard?
Steven Gerrard currently has the likes of Douglas Luiz, John McGinn, Marvelous Nakamba and Jacob Ramsey in his locker. But with more news coming in that Douglas Luiz is on the verge of leaving the club in the summer, Villa have identified Wijnaldum as a potential replacement.
Georginio Wijnaldum has proven himself in the Premier League before being one of the key players in Liverpool’s league win in 2020. He has the ability to keep control of a game from the middle of the park and is immensely press resistant. It would be ideal for Aston Villa to use the Dutch international’s experience in order to build a team that will challenge the top clubs in the league in the seasons to come.
