In a recent interview with Football Insider, former Leeds United forward Noel Whelan tipped Aston Villa to move in for Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Yves Bissouma. When asked about the Villans’ interest in the Seagulls star, Whelan said,
“That would be a brilliant signing – wow.
“I’ve always been an admirer of him. He’s so competitive in that midfield area. He’s got energy, aggression, but he also brings real quality on the ball.
“He’ll be looked at by quite a few clubs if his contract continues to wind down. He’s been a standout and so consistent for Brighton for a number of years now.
“He’s so good that in my mind, he’d be a better signing than Coutinho – no doubt about it. He’s one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.
“It’s such an important area of the pitch to really win your battles and dominate, and Bissouma can do just that.”
Bissouma’s Decent Form In English Football This Season
Bissouma is having another solid season at the American Express Community Stadium and has been responsible for putting in a series of dominant displays at the centre of Graham Potter’s midfield. The Mali international has participated in 15 matches for the Seagulls during this campaign, providing one assist in various competitions.
The 25-year-old has anchored the Brighton midfield with a lot of conviction as he is averaging 3.6 tackles, 1.9 interceptions, 1.9 clearances, 0.9 shots and 1.7 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has even distributed possession accurately from midfield after making 88.8% of his attempted passes in the English first division (stats via whoscored).
Is Bissouma A Good Choice For Aston Villa Head Coach Steven Gerrard?
Bissouma loves a tackle in midfield and usually times his challenges well to often come away with the ball at the centre of the park. He excels at offering some solid protection for his teammates at the back and doesn’t mind clearing the danger when the opposition are on the offensive.
The 18-time Mali international packs a lot of venom with his strikes from long range. Moreover, he is an excellent passer of the ball and can even make some driving runs with the ball towards the opponent’s penalty area.
At the moment, Bissouma is playing some of the best football of his playing career, so he will make an instant impact at Villa Park if Steven Gerrard decides to seal a move for him this month. He will add a lot of quality to the Villans‘ midfield and could potentially form a great midfield partnership with John McGinn in the coming seasons. With all things considered, the Brighton star will be a brilliant choice for the West Midlands outfit to consider during this winter transfer period.
