According to Goal, Tottenham Hotspur are closely monitoring the progress of Alexander Nubel. The German goalkeeper has impressed in his loan spell at AS Monaco, prompting the Londoners to keep tabs on his development. Nubel’s current loan deal at Monaco expires in 2023, but his parent club Bayern Munich have the option to prematurely end the deal next summer., giving Tottenham the opportunity to snap him up at the end of the season.
Alexander Nubel’s Revival At Monaco
A product of the famed Schalke youth academy, Alexander Nubel had joined Bayern Munich in the summer of 2020. He was regarded as one of the best young ‘keepers in Europe at the time and was brought in as a long-term replacement for Manuel Neuer.
However, with Neuer showing no signs of slowing down, Nubel has struggled with game-time in Bavaria. He featured in only four competitive matches for Bayern in his debut campaign, before being shipped out to AS Monaco on a two-year loan deal last summer.
The move has turned out well for Nubel, who has become the number one choice for Monaco following the departure of Benjamin Lecomte. He has racked up 22 league appearances so far, conceding only 26 goals while keeping five clean sheets. His imposing presence in goal, coupled with his lightning-quick reflexes, have made him one of the best performing goalkeepers in Ligue 1 this term.
Nubel’s performances have not been restricted to the French top flight, as the former Schalke starlet has also impressed in the UEFA Europa League, conceding only three goals in five matches and helping Monaco top Group B and reach the Round of 16.
A Wise Option For Tottenham?
Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in Alexander Nubel stems from the uncertainty surrounding their goalkeeping department. The highly-experienced Hugo Lloris has been an excellent servant for the Londoners over the years, but with his contract expiring in the summer, the Frenchman is expected to move on.
It leaves Antonio Conte with Pierluigi Gollini as the only alternative. Not to mention, the on-loan Atalanta shot-stopper is yet to make a notable impression since joining the club last summer. His slow start to life in England, coupled with the uncertain future of Lloris, accentuates the need for Tottenham to invest in a new goalkeeper.
Nubel, in that regard, could prove to be an excellent option given his raw potential and shot-stopping abilities. The 25-year-old has often been compared to a young Neuer in Germany, and with the player slowly starting to find his mojo in between the sticks, Nubel appears to be a logical investment as Tottenham look to prepare for life without Lloris.
