According to the Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham Hotspur have decided to sell Steven Bergwijn in the January transfer window. It is believed that Ajax are one among many clubs to have submitted an offer for the Netherlands international for a potential permanent move but nothing has been agreed yet with Spurs. Antonio Conte is expected to make drastic changes to the playing squad at Tottenham Hotspur, with several players reportedly dispensable in the January transfer window. The Italian manager will want to bring in quality players who suit his style of play and therefore we can expect a number of outgoings at Spurs.
Steven Bergwijn Falling Below The Pecking Order Under Conte
Steven Bergwijn joined Tottenham Hotspur in January 2020 from Ajax but has found it difficult to get going in the Premier League since then. Bergwijn, who was once a star at Ajax’s rivals PSV Eindhoven, hasn’t been able to live up to the expectations here at Tottenham Hotspur. The Netherlands international has only scored 5 goals in 64 appearances for the London club. Injuries have also not been kind to him as he has missed a lot of games with fitness issues.
This season Steven Bergwijn has only started 3 games in the league and made 5 more substitute appearances, failing to register a single goal. He has not been able to convince Antonio Conte’s about his quality and therefore the Italian is keener on selling the winger. Now it remains to be seen if Tottenham can attract a sizeable fee from his sale.
Can Tottenham Afford To Lose Steven Bergwijn?
Antonio Conte is believed to be relatively unhappy with the lack of quality in his squad. Although Steven Bergwijn has shown flashes of his brilliance at Spurs, he hasn’t been consistent enough to catch the manager’s eye. With the likes of Heung-Min Son, Lucas Moura and Harry Kane under his belt, Conte wants to add quality players like them in the squad in his quest to challenge for the Premier League in the future.
If Tottenham Hotspur can manage to sell the Netherlands international in this transfer window, Antonio Conte will have the opportunity to strengthen the areas which he thinks lacks quality in depth in his squad. With the likes of Bryan Gill, Giovanni Lo Celso and Dele Alli, Tottenham already have enough depth in the attacking department and therefore Antonio Conte might make some move to strengthen his midfield department if Spurs can manage a sizeable fee from Bergwijn’s sale.
