In a recent report, Gazzetta dello Sport (subscription required) mentioned that Newcastle United are weighing up a big move for River Plate forward Julian Alvarez. It is understood that the Magpies are willing to offer the Argentine striker a lucrative contract but the player only wants to join a club with the Tyneside outfit currently struggling to keep themselves in the Premier League.
Alvarez’s Excellent Goal-Scoring Record At River Plate
Alvarez is having an excellent campaign in Argentine football as he has put in several match-winning performances at El Monumental in the last calendar year. The Calchin-born marksman has banged in 18 goals and registered seven assists in 21 appearances for River Plate this season across all fronts.
The 21-year-old has proven himself to be a productive striker in the final third based on his average of 3.1 shots, 2.1 key passes and 2.1 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Liga Profesional. However, he needs to take care of possession a bit better when linking up play with his teammates in the opposition half after completing 73.2% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
What Will Alvarez Bring To Newcastle United?
Alvarez is a quick and agile striker who can time his runs well in behind the opponent’s backline. He deserves a lot of credit for transforming himself into an accomplished goal-scorer in the final third. The Argentine youngster has also shown great maturity by picking up his fair share of assists up top.
A forward of Alvarez’s skill set and potential would be a great acquisition for the Magpies as Eddie Howe is in dire need to inject more quality to his match-day squad.
We can expect the River Plate whizkid to add a lot of goals and assists to Newcastle’s frontline and has what it takes to become a real fan-favorite at St. James’ Park in the coming seasons.
However, realistically, the Magpies could find it difficult to lure Alvarez to Tyneside as the player fancies a move to a top club in search of more trophies which is something that Newcastle cannot offer him right now.
