Manchester United have dominated the papers in recent weeks, with their recent dip in form resulting in speculation surrounding the future of several star players, including Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Premier League giants have dropped points in three of their last seven Premier League matches, with Ralf Rangnick’s decision to leave Bruno Fernandes on the bench, in the recent defeat to Wolves, causing a furore among the fans.
In a recent interview with Football Insider, Gabby Agbonlahor has offered his thoughts on Manchester United and their recent struggles. The former Aston Villa professional has questioned Cristiano Ronaldo’s impact on the team while suggesting the club to cash in on the Portuguese international in the summer.
“Ronaldo looks like he’s using a yard of pace every time he plays. Ronaldo and Cavani, two up front doesn’t work every game because you need one of those players to drop into midfield and get the ball. That’s where they missed Fernandes.”, Agbonlahor told Football Insider.
The 35-year-old went on to highlight the shift in Bruno Fernandes’ role at the club since the arrival of Ronaldo. “You’ve seen the difference in Fernandes since Ronaldo has come in. Before Ronaldo came in, Fernandes was the main man. Now Ronaldo’s the main man. Ronaldo was captain against Wolves. Before Ronaldo came it was Fernandes who was captain when Harry Maguire was out and now he’s on the bench.”
Agbonlahor, who had played in almost 400 competitive matches for Aston Villa, believes Manchester United have made a huge mistake by signing Ronaldo in the summer. He further urged the Red Devils to bin the Portuguese international and start from scratch once again.
“There’s going to be tension there. If you look at the whole situation, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will know he made a mistake by bringing Ronaldo in, simple as that. Yes, Ronaldo has scored but he’s scored goals that Greenwood would have scored, Rashford would have scored in that position. For me, I would let Ronaldo go in the summer. Let Greenwood, Sancho and Rashford play together.”
Ronaldo will be in action when Manchester United take on Aston Villa on Monday, a game where Bruno Fernandes is also expected to make his return after being snubbed against Wolves.
