Aston Villa suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Brentford away from home to go a point behind them in the Premier League table. Danny Ings opened the scoring for the visitors in the 16th minute with a low left-footed finish to give Villa the lead but it was cancelled out by Yoane Wissa in the 42nd minute against the run of play. Mads Roerslev then scored the winner in the 83rd minute to hand Gerrard his first defeat against a non top 3 side in the league.
Let’s take a look at how each Aston Villa player performed during the match against the Bees.
GK: Emiliano Martinez – 6/10
The Argentine keeper had to make a couple of saves but couldn’t keep out Wissa and Roerslev in front of the goal.
RB: Matty Cash – 6/10
Matty Cash went forward a lot of times but lacked that accuracy in the final third to create chances.
CB: Ezri Konsa – 6.5/10
Konsa struggled a bit to position himself as the Brentford attackers caused him problems against the run of play.
CB: Kortney Hause – 5.5/10
Kortney Hause’s 4th league start and the first in a while didn’t go according to plan as he looked out of place for the whole 90 minutes. He wasn’t confident on the ball and struggled to mark the Bees attackers.
LB: Matt Targett – 7/10
The English left-back worked hard throughout the game as he defended deep as well as went forward and made some great overlapping runs.
CM: John McGinn – 7/10
McGinn’s touches on the ball were clean as he tried to create chances for his teammates. He created 3 chances in the game but Villa were not clinical enough in the final third.
CM: Douglas Luiz – 6.5/10
The Brazilian controlled the tempo of the game as he made the most passes but found it difficult to help his centre-backs when Villa were hit on the counters.
CM: Jacob Ramsey – 6/10
Ramsey had a day off at the office as he was replaced in the 69th minute. He failed to take decent touches on the ball and made some unforced errors while passing to his teammates.
LAM: Emiliano Buendia – 7.5/10
Buendia looked lively on the pitch from the start and assisted Villa’s opener with an excellent turn. He created 5 chances but the Villa attackers failed to take the opportunity in their hands.
ST: Danny Ings – 7/10
Ings scored the opener in the 16th minute with a composed finish but was not clinical enough to put all his chances away in the Brentford box.
LW: Bertrand Traore– 6.5/10
Traore’s performance was impressive in the 1st half half but he lacked that cutting edge in the 2nd half to create any openings.
Substitutes:
ST: Morgan Sanson – 6/10
Morgan came on in the 69th minute but couldn’t have any effect on the game.
RAM: Trezeguet – 7/10
He hardly had any time to influence the game.
