Fichajes has recently reported that Barcelona are hoping to seal a swap deal for Paris Saint-Germain keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma which involves Marc-André ter Stegen moving in the other direction. It has been claimed that the Catalan outfit are planning to give up their first-choice keeper to land the Italy international at the end of this campaign.
Donnarumma’s Impressive Form In French Football This Season
Donnarumma has enjoyed a brilliant season at the French capital so far as he has been responsible for producing a run of dominant displays as PSG’S first-team goalie. The 22-year-old has conceded nine goals and secured six clean sheets in 13 matches for the French club during this campaign across various competitions.
The Italian sensation has performed well to average 0.7 clearances and 1.6 long balls per 90 minutes in Ligue 1. He has even distributed the ball relatively well from the back after completing 88% of his attempted passes in the French first division (stats via whoscored).
Is Barcelona Making The Right Call By Swapping Ter-Stegen For Donnarumma?
At the moment, Donnarumma is playing at a higher level than ter-Stegen which could be because he arguably has better defenders around him. The 40-time Italy international boasts excellent reflexes that allow him to make a few world-class saves for his team. He is a neat passer from the back and can handle the ball well when coming out to collect crosses and loose balls inside his penalty box.
The ex-AC Milan talent is a quality keeper who could serve as an upgrade over ter-Stegen at the Nou Camp. Therefore, Barcelona are making the right call by offering to swap their German goalie for Donnarumma next summer as he will be a better option for them in the long run.
The Catalan outfit need to build for the future if they want to taste success under Xavi’s stewardship in the coming seasons. Donnarumma fits Barca’s current plans perfectly and could turn out to be a safe pair of hands for them over the next decade. Hence, Xavi should try everything he can to get a deal done for the PSG goalkeeper in the summer transfer window.
