In a recent report by Football Insider, we have an update that Aston Villa are set to make a last-ditch attempt to sign Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez. Steven Gerrard is desperately interested to sign the Liverpool star in order to improve his defensive options at Aston Villa. The uncertainty over the future of Kortney Hause, who is targeted by West Ham United, has also made Gerrard prepared to fill the hole by bringing in Joe Gomez from the Reds. Villa have already brought in a couple of players in this transfer window who have had a good start at the club and are now keen on upgrading their options at the heart of the defence.
Joe Gomez’s Lack Of Gametime This Season
The 24-year-old has grown into a better player under the coaching of Jurgen Klopp since joining Liverpool in 2015. Gomez played a key role in Liverpool’s 2019-20 league winning campaign which saw him cement his place in the starting lineup but a patella injury in the next season kept him out for almost 8 months which also cost him a place in the national team for the Euro 2020. The return of Virgil Van Dijk and Joel Matip from injuries this season has made it difficult for Gomez to crack into the Liverpool first team. The arrival of Ibrahim Konate has also increased competition in the defensive department of the Reds as Gomez struggles to get enough minutes on the pitch.
Joe Gomez is yet to make a Premier League start this season while all his starts have come in the Champions League and the Carabao Cup. While he has been considered as an important part of the squad, Jurgen Klopp has struggled to integrate him into the first XI which has allowed Aston Villa to be in contention in getting his services.
Should Aston Villa Try Their Best To Sign Joe Gomez?
With the uncertainty over the future of Kortney Hause, it is important that Aston Villa sign someone in this transfer window and upgrade their defensive options in order to chase a top 10 finish in the Premier League this season. Although Gerrard is quite satisfied with his first choice centre-backs Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings, a defender of Joe Gomez’s calibre and experience will no doubt be a great addition to the Villa squad.
Gomez has his rare set of qualities as he is extremely good at reading the game and taking vital positions on the field to stop the opponent’s counterattacks. His main strength is his recovery pace as he is really fast to cover up spaces in behind. Gomez is also good in the air and can play out from the back. It is believed that there is no doubt that the Englishman will have an instant effect under Steven Gerrard and help him compete with the top 6 clubs in the league. Now it remains to be seen if Jurgen Klopp gives the green light to the defender for a move as he still considers him an important part of the squad.
