Tottenham Hotspur were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Southampton at the St. Mary’s Stadium. Southampton took the lead in the 25th minute when James Ward-Prowse smashed a loose ball into the net past Lloris. Spurs failed to get a grip of the game in the first half before Salisu fouled Son in the box to give away a penalty in the 41st minute. He was also sent off for his second yellow card. Harry Kane converted from the spot to make it three goals in his last three games, but Spurs were left frustrated as the Saints held on in the 2nd half with ten men.
Let’s take a look at how each Tottenham Hotspur player fared during the contest against the Saints.
GK: Hugo Lloris – 6.5/10
Lloris didn’t have much to do at all after the Saints were down to 10 men and had to make only one save throughout the game. He swept his lines well when a Southampton attacker broke the Spurs offside trap.
CB: Davinson Sanchez – 7.5/10
The Colombian defender put his body on the line, most importantly in the game’s last minutes to deny Southampton a winner. He dealt well with the Saint attackers and kept them at bay.
CB: Eric Dier – 7/10
The English centre-back didn’t allow any space for the Southampton attackers to work with. He cleared his lines when required except in one situation when Broja went past him.
CB: Ben Davies – 7.5/10
Ben Davies made the most tackles in the game and looked to create chances from the back. Conte used him as an inverted centre-back to add an extra option to his attacks.
RM: Emerson Royal – 6/10
Emerson Royal was wasteful in the final third as he couldn’t provide any accurate cross for the Spurs attackers.
CM: Harry Winks – 8/10
Harry Winks dwelled a bit with the ball a couple of times, but he controlled the tempo of the game in the second half. The English midfielder created three chances in the game, including a spectacular lob pass to Kane, who scored but was offside.
CM: Pierre-Emile Højbjerg – 6.5/10
Højbjerg struggled to get his feet sorted in the middle of the park and was overloaded by the Saint midfielders most of the time.
LM: Sergio Reguilon – 5/10
Reguilon had a disappointing afternoon and was subbed off at half-time as he was on a yellow card.
RAM: Dele Alli – 5.5/10
Dele Alli struggled to get a hold of the game as he lost possession quite a few times in the final third.
LAM: Heung-min Son – 6.5/10
Son earned the penalty which led to the Spurs equalizer but apart from that, the South Korean lacked accuracy in the final third.
ST: Harry Kane – 7.5/10
Harry Kane equalized in the 41st minute from the spot and scored another which was ruled out due to offside. He was also seen dropping between the lines and distributing the play from the middle of the park.
Substitutes:
LB: Matt Doherty – 6/10
Doherty replaced Reguilon at LB but couldn’t provide that final touch when he got two glorious opportunities.
LM: Bryan Gil – 6.5/10
Bryan Gil was lively after coming on and had a brilliant shot saved by Forster in the dying minutes.
RAM: Lucas Moura – 6/10
The Brazilian couldn’t impact the game as Antonio Conte would have liked.
