Manchester United are aiming for their third successive win in the Premier League as they take on Newcastle United on Boxing Day. The Red Devils have fared well under new coach Ralf Rangnick, securing two wins in two matches. Another three points this weekend could catapult them back into the top-four fold as they do have two games in hand over Arsenal.
Predicted Manchester United Lineup Vs Newcastle United
Defence
Ralf Rangnick had offered a positive update heading into this game, suggesting almost all of his players are back to starting contention. That could mean a potential return to the starting eleven for Raphael Varane.
The Frenchman is likely to replace Victor Lindelof in the team, effectively renewing his central defensive partnership with captain Harry Maguire. It could serve as a massive boost for the Red Devils as they look to continue on their improved defensive record.
Elsewhere in the backline, Diego Dalot may once again get the nod ahead of the struggling Aaron Wan-Bissaka at right-back. The same can be said for Alex Telles, who is likely to be given more freedom in the attacking third of the pitch.
David de Gea is another guaranteed starter for Manchester United, as the Spaniard looks to keep a third back to back clean sheet in the Premier League.
Midfield
Rangnick has confirmed that Paul Pogba is set to continue his ongoing spell on the sidelines. The Frenchman’s absence leaves Rangnick with no option but to persist with the midfield combination of Scott McTominay and Fred.
It won’t be surprising to see the two receive additional aid from the playmaker Bruno Fernandes. Alternative, United may opt to start with Nemanja Matic, if they prefer a more defensive approach.
Attack
Fernandes remains a guaranteed starter in one of the two number ten slots in Rangnick’s 4-2-2-2. Who will start alongside him remains an open question, even though Jadon Sancho is by far the favourite. Given the two week break, Sancho is likely to continue in the starting lineup, but it won’t be surprising to see Rangnick adopt a rotation policy in the next game.
Nevertheless, Sancho and Fernandes’ creativity in the final third could go a long way in offering the supply for Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese sensational is likely to receive further aid from supporting forward Marcus Rashford, although Mason Greenwood is another option after returning to full fitness.
