TalkSPORT has recently reported that Newcastle United are eager to recruit Atletico Madrid full-back Kieran Trippier. It is believed that the Magpies want to make the English defensive ace their first signing in the January transfer window.
Trippier’s Unimpressive Form At The Wanda Metropolitano This Season
Tripper has struggled to perform at his best on the right side of Diego Simeone’s defence during this campaign. The England international has made 17 appearances for the Spanish outfit but still waiting to score or assist his first goal of this season. He has even missed a few important matches because of a shoulder injury.
The 31-year-old has struggled to impress down the right flank as he is only averaging 1.4 tackles, 0.6 interceptions and 0.6 clearances per 90 minutes in La Liga. However, he has distributed the ball relatively well after completing 78.6% of his attempted passes in the Spanish first division (stats via whoscored).
What Will Trippier Add To Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe’s Side?
Trippier can be a solid defensive presence on the right flank when he is playing with confidence on the field. He can even make some clever runs with the ball and doesn’t shy away from driving to the by-line to deliver a few crosses into the opposition penalty area.
The 35-time England international is a good passer of the ball as well but has been too inconsistent with his performances down the right-wing. Maybe father time is slowly catching up with his game.
Trippier can definitely benefit from a change of scenery as he looks to get his career back on track. At 31, the Three Lions has only got a handful of years left in him to play at a high level. Hence, he could serve as a decent, short-term option for Newcastle United to pursue this winter.
There is no doubt that Trippier will be an upgrade over Javier Manquillo and Emil Krafth at St. James’ Park. He will add some much-needed quality to Eddie Howe‘s first-team and could even help the Magpies get out of the relegation zone in the second half of this Premier League campaign.
