According to a recent report by the El Nacional, Manchester City are interested to buy the Barcelona right-back Sergino Dest in the January transfer window as the Catalan giants look to offload him. It is believed that Pep Guardiola is looking to add another right full-back to his squad to compete with Kyle Walker as Joao Cancelo is expected to continue at left-back permanently with Benjamin Mendy having no future at the club and Oleksandr Zinchenko linked with an exit in January.
Sergino Dest Fallen Down The Pecking Order Under Xavi
Sergino Dest arrived in Barcelona from Ajax in October 2020 but has failed to provide a mark on his abilities in this stint. The 21-year-old has not been able to show his true form and has been unable to convince the fans of his abilities in his one and a half year spell at the Camp Nou. The arrival of Xavi has made the USA international lose his spot in the starting XI as he has made only 1 league start under the new manager after making 10 starts under his previous manager Ronald Koeman.
The situation has changed overnight as the young full-back looks for a move away from the club. It is believed that Barcelona intend to recoup the €25 million they paid for the USA international as Manchester City remain keen on getting his services this January.
Right Choice For Pep Guardiola?
Manchester City are currently without the services of Benjamin Mendy who is believed to have no future at the club after being in prison for several months. Oleksandr Zinchecko is also linked with a move away from the club in January which will make City run out of options for the full-back positions. Joao Cancelo has already cemented his place as a left full-back in the starting XI alongside Kyle Walker who will turn 32 next year. Pep Guardiola is considering buying Sergino Dest in order to reinforce his defensive options and also provide cover for Walker.
Dest has been a successful player for Ajax before joining Barcelona and will be hoping to revive his previous form under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. He is an attacking full-back who likes to create from the flanks and make overlapping runs using his pace and can be an ideal choice for Pep to have him as a back-up to Walker. Now it remains to be seen if Manchester City pay the €25 million asked by Joan Laporta in January.
