Newcastle United welcomed Manchester City at St. James’ Park earlier today as they looked to grind out a result at home. The Magpies made a nightmare start to the game as they conceded the opening goal in the fifth minute following a mix-up between Martin Dubravka and Ciaran Clark as Ruben Dias scored with his header. Joao Cancelo found the back of the net with a brilliant strike in the 27th minute. Newcastle went into the half-time interval 2-0 down on the scoreline.
The Tyneside outfit conceded two more goals in the second half with Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling both getting their names on the scoresheet. The match finished with the home team crashing to a 4-0 defeat in front of their home fans.
Let’s take a look at how each Newcastle United player performed during the match against Man City.
GK: Martin Dubravka – 6/10
The Magpies keeper conceded the opening goal due to a terrible mix-up between him and Ciaran Clark. He made a few good saves but ended the day conceding four goals which won’t do his confidence any good.
RB: Jacob Murphy – 6/10
Murphy produced a battling display inside his half but was no match for the Man City attackers. He also gave away the ball cheaply at times during the game.
CB: Jamaal Lascelles – 5.5/10
He made a few important clearances but won’t be pleased after conceding two goals in both halves.
CB: Ciaran Clark – 5/10
Clark got into a terrible mix-up with Dubravka in the lead-up to Ruben Dias’ goal. He looked shaky at the back and had a tough day inside St. James’ Park.
LB: Matt Ritchie – 6/10
Ritchie showed some fight in the face of adversity by making some crucial contributions on the defensive end of the field. However, he failed to make an impact in the Man City half.
RW: Miguel Almiron – 6/10
He worked his socks off to help his teammates out at the back but had a quiet game in the final third.
CM: Joe Willock – 5.5/10
Willock struggled to get into the rhythm of the game and got substituted at half-time.
CM: Isaac Hayden – 6/10
The English talent didn’t take too many chances with his clearances but failed to influence the game going forward. He got replaced at the hour mark.
CM: Joelinton – 6.5/10
He offered decent cover for the Newcastle backline and made a few impressive runs with the ball. However, Joelinton never looked like he would score.
LW: Ryan Fraser – 6/10
He made some decent chances for others around him but lacked the cutting edge in the attacking third of the field.
ST: Callum Wilson – 6/10
Wilson had just one shot in the game but never threatened the Man City goal.
Substitutes:
ST: Allan Saint-Maximin – 6.5/10
He completed a few promising dribbles with the ball but hardly got a sniff at goal.
CM: Sean Longstaff – 6/10
Longstaff struggled to get a foothold in the game.
CM: Jeff Hendrick – 6/10
He added some energy to the Magpies midfield.
