In a recent interview with Everton’s official website, Rafael Benitez revealed that Dominic Calvert-Lewin is getting ‘closer’ to making a return from injury. Benitez said,
“Hopefully we can bring some players back – Dominic [Calvert-Lewin] is closer, we will see if Tom Davies is also closer and we have some time to recover Seamus [Coleman] and Allan.
“Hopefully it will be a good time for us.
“Still, we will be missing players but at least some of them will come back and they can give us more competition.”
Calvert-Lewin’s Injury Plagued Season At Goodison Park
Calvert-Lewin has missed most of this campaign due to a fractured toe. However, he has still caught the eye in the limited time he has played for Everton this season as he has scored three goals in three league matches so far.
The 24-year-old deserves a pat on the back for averaging 1.0 interceptions, 0.7 clearances, 3.7 shots and 1.0 key passes per 90 minutes in the Premier League. However, he needs to figure out a way to improve his ball distribution after completing just 66.7% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
Calvert-Lewin Close To Returning From Injury: Big Boost For Everton?
Calvert-Lewin has taken great strides towards improving himself over the past few seasons. He has developed himself into an ideal target man up top. The Sheffield-born talent can use his powerful 1.89m frame to cause a lot of problems for the opposition in the air. He can be an unforgiving finisher in the final third when he is playing at the top of his game.
However, frequent injuries have derailed his progress at Goodison Park. With Rafael Benitez currently dealing with a whole host of injuries, Calvert-Lewin’s return would no doubt be a massive boost for the Toffees and their chances of moving up the Premier League table next year.
The England international remains one of the most influential members of Everton‘s squad, so Benitez would be hoping that the striker can recover in time to feature in time for the upcoming post-Christmas fixtures in English football.
