In a recent report, Liverpool Echo revealed that Everton midfielder Fabian Delph could leave the Merseyside club in January. It has been stated that the Toffees midfield ace has just got over six months left to run in his contract, so Rafael Benitez might choose to move him on during the winter transfer period.
Delph’s Injury Ravaged Season In English Football
Delph has only managed to play a sporadic role in Everton’s squad during this campaign after missing a lot of key games because of a shoulder injury. The 32-year-old has made six appearances for the Toffees this season, receiving 249 minutes of playing time on all fronts.
Despite his limited playing minutes at Goodison Park recently, the Bradford-born sensation has done well to average 1.5 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 0.7 clearances per game in the Premier League. He has even distributed possession relatively well from midfield based on his pass completion rate of 83.3% in league football (stats via whoscored).
Should Everton Boss Rafael Benitez Sanction Delph’s Exit Next Month?
Delph is a decent passer of the ball and can anchor the midfield well for his side. He can offer decent protection for his teammates at the back by getting stuck in with some solid tackles to earn possession back at the centre of the park. The 20-time England international doesn’t shy away from putting his foot through the ball when needed. However, injuries have hampered his progress in recent seasons.
At 32, Delph has only got a few years left in him to play at a high level. Thus, it is no surprise that Everton have so far not agreed on a new contract with the former Aston Villa player as he is currently surplus to requirements at the Merseyside club.
Rafael Benitez will be better off cashing in on him for a cut-price fee in January if he can find a buyer for the player. Delph needs regular game time if he intends to get his career back on track in English football. Hence, the Toffees should sanction the English midfield ace’s exit when the transfer window reopens at the start of next year.
