In a recent report, Goal.com has mentioned that Chelsea are showing interest in recruiting Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana. It is understood that the Blues are weighing up a move to secure the services of the Foxes centre-back next summer.
Fofana’s Impressive Form Under Brendan Rodgers’ Stewardship Last Season
Fofana is yet to make an appearance for the East Midlands outfit this season because of a fibula fracture. However, the French defensive ace proved himself to be a consistent performer at the King Power Stadium in the previous campaign when he participated in 38 matches for Leicester, scoring one goal and receiving seven yellow cards across multiple competitions.
The 20-year-old was a rock at the back for the Foxes on the defensive end of the field as he averaged 1.8 tackles, 2.2 interceptions and 3.3 clearances per game in the 2020-21 Premier League season. He even distributed the ball with conviction after making 86.4% of his attempted passes in the English top-flight (stats via whoscored).
What Will Fofana Add To Chelsea Head Coach Thomas Tuchel’s Side?
Standing at 1.90m, Fofana can use his strong frame to dominate the opposition in the air and make some important clearances at the back. He is a decent tackler and can sense the danger quickly to earn possession back for his team on the defensive end of the pitch. The Marseille-born sensation is even proficient at playing his way out from the back and did well to prove his worth as a solid defender in top-flight football last season.
There is no denying that the future looks quite promising for Fofana once he returns from his injury. Hence, Chelsea would be wise to engineer a move to bring him to Stamford Bridge at the end of this campaign. The French youngster will add a lot of bite and steel to Thomas Tuchel’s defence and could help the Blues challenge for even more trophies in the coming seasons.
Fofana will also serve as an ideal long-term successor to Thiago Silva, who is in the final stage of his playing career, at the West London club. Thus, Tuchel should think about moving in for the Foxes prospect during the summer transfer period.
