In a recent tweet, renowned journalist Pol Alonso claimed that Barcelona are showing interest in recruiting Chelsea forward Timo Werner in January. It is understood that the Catalan outfit might consider making a loan move to land the German striker with the Blues open to such a possibility this winter.
Werner’s Unimpressive Form At Stamford Bridge This Season
Werner has found life difficult at West London this season as he has struggled to earn regular first-team starts for Chelsea so far. He has also missed a few games due to injury. Still, the German international deserves credit for scoring five goals and providing two assists in 14 matches for the Blues during this campaign in all competitions.
However, Werner has struggled to find consistency in the attacking end of the field based on his average of 2.0 shots, 0.2 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per game in the Premier League. He has even been a bit underwhelming when interchanging possession in the opposition half after making only 76% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Is Werner A Decent Choice For Barcelona Boss Xavi?
Werner is a quick and agile forward who can time his runs well in behind the opponent’s backline. He proved his worth as a composed finisher in the final third during his time in Germany but has so far struggled to score goals consistently in the Premier League.
The 47-time German international has also failed to create enough chances for his teammates over the past few months which could be why Tuchel has often used him as a rotational piece recently.
Werner can definitely benefit from a change of scenery so that he can regain some confidence and get back to scoring goals regularly at the highest level. Barcelona could be an ideal destination for the player as Xavi can offer him regular first-team chances at the Nou Camp. He will undeniably add a lot of pace and firepower to Barca’s attack.
Plus, Werner could go on to form a lethal attacking partnership with Memphis Depay and Ansu Fati at the Catalan club in the second half of this campaign. Therefore, Xavi should try everything in his power to secure the German’s services on loan as he would be a decent choice for Barca during this winter transfer period.
