Newcastle United welcomed Norwich City at St. James’ Park earlier tonight as they focused on picking up their first victory of this Premier League campaign. The Magpies made a poor start to the contest as Ciaran Clark was sent off in the ninth minute for bringing Temmu Pukki down when he was clear through on goal. The home side recovered well from their early setback and went into the half-time break with a goalless scoreline.
The Tyneside outfit managed to score the all-important opener courtesy of Callum Wilson’s successful penalty in the 61st minute. However, the Canaries equalised via Teemu Pukki’s excellent finish just 18 minutes later. Newcastle ended up securing a hard-fought 1-1 draw at home which keeps them rooted at the bottom of the Premier League table.
Let’s take a look at how each Newcastle United player performed during the clash against the Canaries.
GK: Martin Dubravka – 7.5/10
The Newcastle keeper made several important saves at the back to restrict the Norwich attackers to just one goal during the 90 minutes.
RB: Javier Manquillo – 6/10
The Spaniard tried to keep things solid at the back but failed to influence the game in the opposition half.
CB: Fabian Schar – 6.5/10
He made a couple of crucial interceptions inside his half and managed to clear the danger when the Canaries were on the front foot.
CB: Ciaran Clark – 4/10
Clark let his teammates down by getting sent off so early in the game.
LB: Jamal Lewis – 6.5/10
He performed his defensive duties well but lacked the cutting edge going forward.
RM: Ryan Fraser – 6/10
Fraser got substituted following Clark’s dismissal in the ninth minute.
CM: Jonjo Shelvey – 6.5/10
The ex-Liverpool midfielder offered decent protection for his teammates at the back and engineered one good chance during the 90 minutes.
CM: Joe Willock – 6.5/10
Willock struggled to get a foothold in the game but had a couple of lively moments in the Norwich half. He got replaced in the 72nd minute.
LM: Allan Saint-Maximin – 7/10
He caused all sorts of problems for the opposition defenders with his dribbling and creativity down the left flank.
ST: Callum Wilson – 7/10
Wilson was fortunate to score with his penalty which gave Newcastle the lead in the 61st minute. However, it was not enough for the Magpies to get the win.
ST: Joelinton – 6.5/10
He worked hard to track back and defend when needed. Joelinton also had a couple of shot attempts but never looked like he would score.
Substitutes:
CB: Federico Fernandez – 7/10
Fernandez won the ball back a couple of times and also didn’t shy away from putting his foot through the ball when the opposition were on the frontfoot.
CM: Isaac Hayden – 6/10
He offered very little after coming off the bench.
LW: Miguel Almiron – 6/10
Almiron added some energy to Newcastle’s attack.
