Newcastle United locked horns with Brighton and Hove Albion at the American Express Community Stadium earlier this evening as they hoped to pick up their first win of this Premier League season. The Magpies made a poor start to the game and went on to concede a penalty in the 24th minute which Leandro Trossard successfully converted to put Brighton ahead in the contest. The Tyneside giants were not able to come up with a response and had to go into the half-time interval 1-0 down and with a lot of work to do in the second half.
The visitors finally managed to score the leveller in the 66th minute when Isaac Hayden found the back of the net with a good volley. Robert Sanchez was sent off for a poor challenge on Callum Wilson in the dying embers of the game as the match finished honours even with the Magpies being held to a 1-1 draw away at Brighton.
Let’s take a look at how each Newcastle United player performed during the clash against the Seagulls.
GK: Kar; Darlow – 7/10
The Magpies custodian made a few important saves to keep the Seagulls frustrated despite conceding from a penalty in the first half.
RB: Jacob Murphy – 7/10
Murphy got stuck in with multiple tackles and managed to read the danger quickly to make a few important interceptions at the back. He even had a couple of shot attempts.
CB: Emil Krafth – 6/10
He made two clearances and was also quite tidy with his passing. Krafth got replaced in injury-time.
CB: Jamaal Lascelles – 6/10
The English defender didn’t take too many risks when clearing his lines and even blocked a goal-bound shot from the opposition.
CB: Ciaran Clark – 7/10
Clark was defensively solid and picked up an assist for setting up Hayden’s equalising goal in the second half.
LB: Matt Ritchie – 6.5/10
He made a couple of tackles and engineered one good chance in the Brighton half.
RM: Miguel Almiron – 6/10
Almiron offered very little during his time on the field and got replaced in the 73rd minute.
CM: Isaac Hayden – 8/10
Hayden made life quite tough for the Seagulls with his tackling in midfield. He ended up rescuing a point for Newcastle as he scored with his volley in the 66th minute.
CM: Jonjo Shelvey – 6/10
The ex-Liverpool midfielder failed to get a foothold in the game at the centre of the park.
LM: Allan Saint-Maximin – 6.5/10
He used his pace to make a couple of decent runs with the ball but never looked like he had a goal in him.
ST: Callum Wilson – 6/10
Chances came at a premium for Wilson but he still managed to put in a battling display deep inside the opponent’s half.
Substitutes:
RW: Joelinton – 6.5/10
He didn’t hesitate to help his teammates out at the back and made one good run going forward.
ST: Dwight Gayle – N/A
Gayle hardly had any time to influence the game.
