According to Daily Mirror, Dean Henderson is hoping to seal an exit from Old Trafford in the upcoming January transfer window. The goalkeeper is apparently frustrated over his lack of game-time this season and is prepared to take the next step in his career. He is joined by Donny van de Beek in the list of players who are hoping to leave Manchester United in winter.
Dean Henderson’s Struggles At Manchester United
At the start of the 2021/22 season, Dean Henderson was almost destined to take over the reins from David de Gea in between the sticks for Manchester United, especially after the Spaniard’s disappointing performance in the Europa League final.
But de Gea’s early-season commitment, followed by his performances made quite an impression, leading to him retaining his position as the number one ‘keeper for the Red Devils. It has come at the expense of Henderson, who has featured in only one competitive game this season – a Carabao Cup fixture where Man United ended up losing to West Ham.
Truthfully, de Gea has performed extremely well to retain his status in the team. In fact, the former Atletico Madrid superstar has been one of the top performers for the Red Devils this season, saving the blushes of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer time and time again.
Should Man United Let Him Leave?
Manchester United have had a goalkeeping dilemma for a few years now and while Dean Henderson is one of the most talented shot-stoppers in England, the presence of de Gea has indeed been crucial to their success.
The Spaniard is one of the best ‘keepers in the league, and his performances have spoken for themselves. At the same time, though, the Red Devils must prepare for the future ahead.
At the age of 31, de Gea can still perform at the top of his game for several years. However, he is one of the highest-paid players in the team and his lofty wage package does cripple the club’s financial powers to an extent.
Henderson, on the other hand, is yet to prove himself at the highest level of football. But he certainly has what it takes to replace de Gea for the long-term, effectively allowing the club to move on from the Spaniard and free up a significant wage budget that could be useful in the pursuit of other valuable assets.
