According to Fichajes, Manchester United are among the clubs interested in the services of Lovro Majer. The Rennes playmaker has become a subject of interest for multiple clubs across Europe and could be set for a big-money move next season. It has put United on red alert, although the Red Devils are set to face stiff competition from Real Madrid, who have identified the player as a long-term replacement for Luka Modric.
Who Is Lovro Majer?
A product of the Dinamo Zagreb youth academy, Lovro Majer is rated among the best in the pool of up and coming Croatian footballers. An attacking midfielder by trade, the young playmaker made his initial breakthrough at his hometown club, featuring in almost 100 competitive outings.
During his time at Dinamo Zagreb, Majer made a solid impression with his overall creativity, work ethic and ability to orchestrate the game. In just 99 appearances, the playmaker was involved in as many as 44 goals for Zagreb, before eventually earning a move to Stade Rennais in the summer.
The 23-year-old has endured a slow start to his career in Ligue 1, with only one start so far. But that is due to a hip injury he picked up earlier in the campaign. The midfielder has recovered since, having featured in all of Rennes’ last four league games. He even starred in the win over Strasbourg by setting up Nayef Aguerd’s late winner.
Given the success Majer has enjoyed early on in his career, the Croatian certainly has the talent to become the next big creative phenomenon for his country, which is why the 23-year-old is already courted by some of the major clubs across Europe.
Is He A Good Option For Manchester United?
Manchester United’s pursuit of Lovro Majer is hardly surprising, as the Croatian international could soon emerge as one of the best playmakers in the Ligue 1. However, from a sporting perspective, a potential move for the former Dinamo Zagreb starlet doesn’t make much sense.
The Red Devils have already faced massive criticism over their treatment of attacking midfielders like Jesse Lingard and Donny van de Beek in recent years. Both the players have found it difficult to displace Bruno Fernandes in the starting eleven, and their hopes of making a breakthrough into the starting eleven anytime soon are almost non-existent.
Majer, too, could face a similar scenario should he make the jump to Old Trafford. The deal doesn’t make much sense for United either, knowing the Premier League giants may have to spend a fortune to secure the services of the talented playmaker.
Not to mention, Majer is yet to hit the ground running in Ligue 1 so far, so it is perhaps wiser for United to keep on monitoring the Croatian international while setting their sights on other, more sensible targets in the market.
