According to Fichajes, Edinson Cavani has emerged as a target for Sevilla. The Spanish giants are in the market for a new attacker after the injury of Youssef En-Nesyri. Their sporting director Monchi has already drawn up a list of three potential options in January, one that includes Manchester United forward Cavani, who has fallen behind in the pecking order at Old Trafford this season.
Edinson Cavani’s Struggles This Season
After an impressive debut season in the Premier League that saw him score ten goals, Edinson Cavani signed a contract extension with Manchester United in the summer. He was expected to become the joint-leader of the club’s offensive unit, alongside the young and talented Mason Greenwood this season.
However, the unexpected arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo saw the tables turn against his favour. The veteran forward instantly saw himself moving behind in the pecking order, with Ronaldo becoming the undisputed goalscoring option for United.
The Portuguese international hasn’t disappointed either, scoring nine goals in 12 competitive appearances for Manchester United. But it has seen Cavani struggle to become a valuable asset for the team.
In the first three months of the new season, the former Napoli forward has featured in five Premier League matches, only two of them were being starts. It is simply unacceptable for a player of his calibre, which is why Sevilla are now prepared to pounce on him in the upcoming January transfer window.
Should Man United Let Him Go?
Manchester United will have no choice but to cash in on Edinson Cavani in January. The player’s current contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of the season, which means he will become a free agent next summer. A mid-season exit to Sevilla, in that regard, could serve as a slight financial boost for the club.
The transfer would make sense from a sporting perspective, as Man United do not require a new forward. Ronaldo’s presence in the team has made the attack too one-dimensional, but the Portuguese icon has delivered time and time again.
In addition to Ronaldo, Manchester United also boast the services of talented stars like Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford, both of who are capable of operating in the number nine role. Therefore, the club should definitely sanction the sale of Cavani, allowing him the opportunity to gain regular game-time after what has been a difficult first half of the 2021/22 campaign for the veteran.
