According to the El Nacional, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are asking Barcelona for ace midfielder Frenkie De Jong in order to let the Catalan club have the services of Raheem Sterling. Manchester City have proposed an exchange deal to Joan Laporta to keep both the parties happy with Guardiola being a huge fan of De Jong who has not quite matched the levels he reached at Ajax with Barcelona.
Frenkie De Jong Not At His Best In Barcelona
The Netherlands international has still not been able to find his best form with the Spanish giants since his move from Ajax in 2019. Frenkie De Jong looked a hugely promising talent when he took Ajax to the Champions League semi-final in 2019 which prompted Barcelona to sign him as other big clubs missed out. But since then, De Jong has only been a shadow of his own self in the Blaugrana colours.
It is for this reason that the club will be waiting for him to perform under new manager Xavi Hernandez before they make any decision on him staying at the club. But this also suggests that his future with Barcelona is still in doubts with the Dutch midfielder hoping to turn it around under the new manager.
The likes of Antoinne Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele and Phillipe Coutinho are all the big money signings who have struggled at Barcelona recently. So De Jong is not the only one in this category and with his enormous potential, Xavi will expect him to turn the tables.
Why De Jong Will Be A Perfect Fit For Manchester City?
Pep Guardiola is understood to be a huge fan of the Dutch midfielder and it is believed that he was frustrated when the midfielder moved to Barcelona. Despite De Jong’s lack of form, Pep believes that he will be able to get back to his best as the midfielder carries the DNA of Ajax in his game and that is something Manchester City will benefit from.
City’s brand of football is well suited to De Jong’s style. With defensive midfielders like Rodri in the team, it is believed that the Dutch player can find his best form in Manchester. As of now, Barca have no plans to sell him but if Xavi insists to buy Raheem Sterling, the midfielder can be on the table for a potential player plus money deal. It is a possibility that Barca would like to bring goals to the team and hence a deal like this is very much on the cards.
