Liverpool enjoyed an emphatic 4-0 victory over Southampton at Anfield to go 2nd in the table and only 1 point behind the league leaders Chelsea. Diogo Jota opened the scoring in as early as the 2nd minute to give Liverpool a head start to the game. The Reds then cruised to victory with goals from Jota, Thiago and Virgil van Djik to put the pressure back on Chelsea before they face Manchester United later this weekend.
Let’s take a look at how each Liverpool player performed during the clash against the Saints.
GK: Alisson Becker – 7.5/10
The Brazilian made some crucial saves when called upon and made sure Liverpool kept a cleansheet.
RB: Trent Alexander-Arnold – 7.5/10
Trent made some good cross-field passes to open up space in the Southampton defence and was rewarded with another assist when Van Djik scored from his well-taken corner.
CB: Ibrahim Konate – 6.5/10
Konate looked a bit rusty but did well to make sure Liverpool didn’t concede.
CB: Virgil Van Dijk – 8.5/10
LB: Andrew Robertson – 8/10
Robertson came back in the starting XI with an impressive performance as he assisted Jota’s first goal to give Liverpool an early lead. He further created 2 more big chances which was unfortunately not taken by the Liverpool attackers.
CM: Thiago Alcantara – 7.5/10
Thiago misplaced a couple of passes to begin with but his close control was a treat to watch along with his passing and he also scored a well-taken goal to give Liverpool a 3-0 lead before the break.
CM: Fabinho – 7.5/10
The Brazilian was key in sweeping out every Southampton counter and controlled the tempo of the game.
CM: Jordan Henderson – 6.5/10
Henderson won a few 2nd balls and took many good positions in the opposition box but was not clinical enough today.
RW: Mohamed Salah – 7.5/10
The Egyptian hardly had any chance to score but was influential on the pitch with his assist to Jota for his 2nd goal.
ST: Diogo Jota – 9/10
Jota capped off with a man of the match performance with two well-taken goals and some really well link up plays with the Liverpool attackers.
LW: Sadio Mane – 7/10
Sadio took defenders on in the left-hand channel and made it difficult for Livramento to defend.
Substitutes:
ST: Takumi Minamino – NA
The striker came on late in the game.
CM: Alex Oxlade Chamberlain– 6/10
Oxlade Chamberlain was lively since coming on and had a couple of opportunities to shoot at goal.
CM: James Milner– 6/10
A late substitute, but effective nonetheless.
