According to Calciomercato, Harry Winks is looking for a new club in the upcoming January transfer window. The midfielder is set to leave Tottenham Hotspur after falling out of favour under Nuno Espirito Santo and is already attracting interest from Italian clubs like Inter Milan and AS Roma, where he can reunite with former manager Jose Mourinho.
Harry Winks’ Struggles At Tottenham Hotspur
Harry Winks has had a difficult couple of years at Tottenham, especially after the departure of Mauricio Pochettino. The midfielder has lacked game-time over the past 18 months, struggling to cope with the increased competition.
Indeed, the Englishman had featured in only 15 Premier League matches last term, starting on only nine occasions. The arrival of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg coupled with the presence of Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso had left him trailing in the pecking order.
It has been a similar story this season, with new head coach Nuno Espirito Santo starting him on only one occasion this season. It appears even Oliver Skipp is starting to gain a more prominent role in the first-team, leaving the 25-year-old’s future at Tottenham uncertain.
Harry Winks still does have a contract until 2024, but his current struggles suggest that he might set for a January exit from Tottenham, as the midfielder looks to take the next step in his career.
Should Tottenham Offload Winks?
Tottenham Hotspur are in desperate need of reinforcements in their midfield department as their current crop of options offers very little variety. Hojbjerg has been a staple in the side due to his work ethic, leadership and ball-winning abilities, but Skipp and Winks haven’t provided much to the table whereas the likes of Ndombele and Lo Celso have either struggled with injuries or lack of form.
Winks, in particular, is a very limited midfielder. The Englishman is often good in possession, but he can be outmuscled easily in midfield while he doesn’t have a large range of passing. The 25-year-old also tends to struggle a lot when dealing with a high pressing opposition.
As such, Tottenham should certainly consider offroading Winks in the January transfer window. The midfielder is clearly a misfit in Nuno Espirito Santo’s tactical setup, with very little scope for redemption. His sale could serve as a massive financial boost for the North London giants as well, allowing them to land their desired targets in the market.
