According to Calciomercato, Real Madrid have expressed interest in Aymeric Laporte. The Manchester City defender is facing an uncertain future at the club despite his current contract expiring in 2025. There is apparently a dearth of options at centre-back for Los Blancos, which has led to Carlo Ancelotti eyeing a potential swoop for the ex-Athletic Bilbao star.
Aymeric Laporte’s Spell At Manchester City
Aymeric Laporte has had a mixed time at Manchester City since joining the club in January 2018. He was a key figure in the Man City defence in his first one and a half years at Etihad, helping the Citizens maintain their dominance over English football.
In fact, Laporte has won three Premier League titles, the FA Cup and four Carabao Cups since joining Manchester City. But it is fair to point out the struggle he has had over lack of fitness.
The Spaniard, who also holds a French passport, has failed to muster over 1,500 minutes of league action in his last two seasons. In addition to injuries, the former Athletic starlet had notably fallen behind John Stones and Ruben Dias in the pecking order last term.
The arrival of Dias, in particular, has been hugely detrimental for Laporte. Although the 27-year-old has started the season as Man City’s first-choice defender, it appears only a matter of time before he switches to a new club that can offer him more game-time.
Is He A Good Fit For Real Madrid?
As mentioned earlier, Real Madrid do have a shortage of depth in central defence. While they did bring in David Alaba in the summer, they had to cope with the departures of Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane.
Moreover, Nacho Fernandez is in the final phase of his career while there are question marks over the quality of Jesus Vallejo. As such, the arrival of someone like Aymeric Laporte could be a massive boost for the club.
The Spaniard offers a lot of experience at the highest level of football and might provide the winning mentality that could be necessary as Real Madrid look to restore their lost glory under Carlo Ancelotti.
Perhaps more importantly, Laporte has valuable experience in La Liga, which should make it easier for him to settle into things at Santiago Bernabeu. And given his technical and passing skills, the Manchester City star could indeed be an excellent target for Los Blancos either in January or next summer.
