In a recent report, TNT Sports stated that Real Madrid left-back Marcelo wants to return to South America at the end of this campaign. It is understood that the Brazilian defensive ace could choose to leave Los Blancos as he is eager to end his career back in his homeland.
Marcelo’s Recent Form At The Santiago Bernabeu Stadium
The 33-year-old has got less than 12 months remaining in his Real Madrid contract. Unless the Brazilian sensation pens a new contract, it is quite likely that the Madrid giants would have no choice but to let him go as a free agent next summer.
Marcelo has only made one appearance for Los Blancos this season after missing a lot of key matches because of a muscle injury. The experienced full-back was also a sporadic presence in the Madrid starting XI last season when he featured in 19 matches for his current employers, picking up four assists in the process across multiple competitions.
The Rio de Janeiro-born defender deserves credit for averaging 1.6 tackles, 0.6 interceptions, 0.6 clearances, 0.8 shots, 1.0 key passes and 0.8 dribbles per game in La Liga. He even distributed the ball accurately from the left flank after completing 82.7% of his attempted passes in the Spanish first division (stats via whoscored).
Should Real Madrid Let Marcelo Leave Next Summer?
Marcelo has been quite injury-prone in recent times probably because father time is catching up with his game. The Brazilian remains a good dribbler with the ball at his feet and can whip in some dangerous crosses from the left wing.
When the Real Madrid veteran is playing regularly on the field, he can be a reliable defender at the back. However, there is no denying that Marcelo is a player on the decline which could be why Los Blancos are yet to offer him a new contract.
At the moment, Ancelotti has already got Ferland Mendy and Miguel Gutiérrez fighting for a place in his first team. Plus, both David Alaba and Nacho can play in the left-back position if needed. Hence, there is no reason for Real Madrid to not let Marcelo leave when his contract runs out at the end of this campaign.
