Manchester United will lock horns with Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday evening, hoping to pick up all three points on their home turf. The Red Devils will be coming into the match on the back of a thrilling 3-2 win against Atalanta in the UEFA Champions League, whereas Jurgen Klopp’s men recorded a similar 3-2 victory over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will probably opt for the 4-2-3-1 formation with a couple of tweaks from the last game as Paul Pogba looks likely to make his way back into the starting eleven.
4-2-3-1 Predicted Manchester United Lineup Vs Liverpool
Defence
David de Gea is expected to start in between the sticks for the upcoming clash. The Spanish shot-stopper would be looking to put up a strong performance and secure a clean sheet on Sunday.
Given the absence of Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire will continue to form the centre-half partnership with Victor Lindelof at the heart of United’s backline.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka is a guaranteed starter at the right-back position, whereas Luke Shaw will fill in on the other flank as the left-back. The English duo would be expected to stay compact and keep their shape defensively.
Midfield
Fred is expected to start over Scott McTominay in the defensive midfield position, whereas Paul Pogba will slot in as the central midfielder.
Having picked up a minor knock against Atalanta in midweek, Bruno Fernandes remains a doubt for the clash versus Liverpool.
“Games like Wednesday night are always going to bring knocks and bruises and we do have two or three carrying knocks from that game,” said Solskjaer.
“I’ll give everyone time, I hope I can pick from a fully fit squad, I might be without two or three. Bruno might be a doubt but he’s doing everything he can to be ready.”
Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood will take up the wide positions, playing on the left and right-wing respectively.
Donny van de Beek will have to settle for a place on the bench, but he could be brought on in the second half of the contest if needed.
Attack
Following the midweek heroics against Atalanta, Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to lead the line for Manchester United this Sunday. The 36-year-old striker’s adept movement in front of the goal could cause a lot of trouble for the Liverpool defence that has conceded five goals in their last three league matches.
Jadon Sancho could be brought off the bench as an impact substitute in the second forty-five minutes of the match.
