In a recent interview with Give Me Sport, renowned journalist Luke Hatfield urged Aston Villa to recruit Manchester United midfielder, Donny van de Beek. Hatfield said,
“He’d be fantastic for Villa, he’d be a brilliant signing. But I’m not too sure whether the wages would work out.
“He’ll be on big money at United – although I’m not saying Villa won’t pay big wages because they are willing to hand out wages to the right players.”
Van de Beek’s Disappointing Spell At The Theatre Of Dreams So Far
The Dutch midfield ace has struggled to secure regular playing opportunities at Manchester so far and only managed to play a sporadic role in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad last season. Van de Beek featured in 36 matches for the Red Devils in the previous campaign, netting one goal and picking up two goals on all fronts.
Most of the Nijkerkerveen-born sensation’s game time came as a substitute which explains why he only averaged 0.8 tackles, 0.3 interceptions, 0.3 clearances and 0.4 dribbles per game in Premier League football. At least, the 24-year-old was tidy with his ball distribution after making 86.1% of his attempted passes in league football last season (stats via whoscored).
What Will Van de Beek Bring To Aston Villa?
Van de Beek can be a decent playmaker in the opposition half when he is playing regularly on the pitch. The Dutch midfielder also showed during his time at Ajax that he can chip in by scoring his share of goals from midfield.
However, things have not fallen in place for Van de Beek, so it is only logical for the player to seal a move to a club like Aston Villa either on loan or permanently so that he can ensure regular first-team starts next year.
At 24, Van de Beek still has plenty of time to prove his worth at the highest level. We can expect the Dutchman to bring a lot of quality to Dean Smith‘s midfield department. Plus, the Man United outcast could go on to form a productive midfield partnership with John McGinn at Villa Park in the coming seasons. Therefore, Smith would be wise to listen to Hatfield’s advice by orchestrating a move to land Van de Beek in January or next summer.
