In a recent print edition, Il Resto del Carlino stated that Aston Villa could reignite their interest in Bologna left-back Aaron Hickey in January. It is understood that the Villans are eyeing a move to acquire the services of the Scottish defender.
Hickey’s Impressive Form In Italian Football This Season
Hickey has proven himself to be a valuable contributor on the left side of Bologna’s defence. The 19-year-old has scored two goals in nine matches for the Italian outfit this season across various competitions.
The Scottish full-back has caught the eye by averaging 1.0 tackles, 0.9 interceptions, 1.0 shots and 1.3 dribbles per game in Serie A. He has even distributed the ball relatively well after completing 83.2% of his attempted passes in the top tier of Italian football (stats via whoscored).
Hickey‘s current contract at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara runs out in the summer of 2024, so the Villans will have to make a big offer if they want to convince Bologna to sell their prized asset when the transfer window reopens in January.
Aston Villa Could Reignite Interest In Hickey: Wise Move By The Villans?
Hickey is a moderately-paced left-back who can make some clever runs with the ball down the left flank. He loves a tackle and can read the danger quickly to secure possession back inside his half. The Scottish sensation is not afraid to strike the ball from long range but needs to add a few more goals and assists to his game in the coming seasons.
The Villans can benefit from adding a promising young player like Hickey as he will add some healthy competition for Matt Targett at Villa Park. He is already good enough to fight for a regular starting spot in Dean Smith‘s first-team and is versatile enough to offer cover for the centre-back and right-back positions.
Hence, it would be a wise move by the Aston Villa manager if he can arrange a move to secure the signature of Hickey this winter. With all things considered, the Villans should consider going all out to bring the Scottish youngster to England.
