According to Calciomercato, Arsenal have registered interest in Christopher Nkunku. The RB Leipzig star is facing an uncertain future at the club even though his current contract in East Germany expires in 2024. It has put Arsenal on red alert, as head coach Mikel Arteta continues his push for reinforcements in the offensive department.
Christopher Nkunku’s Brilliant Start To The Season
Christopher Nkunku has been a major success at Leipzig ever since his move from PSG in 2019. The attacker was involved in 33 league goals during his first two seasons at the club under the leadership of Julian Nagelsmann.
However, under new coach Jesse Marsch, Nkunku has been performing at a whole new level this season. In 12 competitive matches so far, the forward has scored nine goals while registering four assists. Four of his goals have come in the UEFA Champions League, including a stunning hat-trick against Manchester City.
An attacking midfielder by trade, Nkunku has been thriving in the number ten position under Marsch. He has been given the freedom to move in and around the final third, even joining the lone attacker up front, at times.
It has made the Frenchman quite dangerous, especially on the counter while his excellent scoring record indicates his proficiency in front of goal, effectively making him one of the best performers in the Bundesliga this season.
A Good Investment For Arsenal?
Arsenal are in need of an attacking spark upfront. The returning Martin Odegaard has had a difficult start to the campaign while the team has also struggled with productivity.
In Christopher Nkunku, Mikel Arteta can potentially find an answer to both his creative and goalscoring problems. As the attacker has suggested with his performances in the Bundesliga, he can be a very productive player, who can not only create chances for his teammates but also score goals.
Moreover, the Frenchman offers a lot of tactical versatility to the squad as he can operate on the flanks, in addition to his favoured number ten position. He can even be considered as a false nine if required.
At Arsenal, Nkunku can be an ideal alternative for Odegaard. But he would ideally be an upgrade over Nicolas Pepe, due to his versatility, directness and the ability to play more consistently at the highest level of football. Hence, he could indeed be a massive coup for the Gunners.
