With the international break almost done and dusted, the Premier League resumes this coming weekend as clubs look to truly start the new campaign after a chaotic transfer window. One of the clubs keen on restarting the season on a strong note is Leeds United, having secured just two points from their first three matches.
The Whites did some good business during the transfer window. But many experts predict them to endure a downfall and become victims of a “second season syndrome”. And here, at The 4th Official, we will talk about three Leeds United players who might falter in the new season.
Robin Koch
Robin Koch’s first season at Leeds United was marred by injuries, but many believe that this could be his breakthrough campaign in the Premier League. His versatility, work ethic and physique have made him a highly-rated figure in the Leeds camp.
However, Koch could be set for yet another difficult season, given the fact that there is no route for him to crack the first-team as of yet. Diego Llorente has seemingly established himself as a first-choice centre-back and alongside him, Marcelo Bielsa has largely opted for either Liam Cooper or Pascal Struijk, leaving Koch stranded.
The German, therefore, might have to rely on injuries to either of the centre-backs or Kalvin Phillips, in order to have any chance of breaking into the starting eleven. As such, this could be a long season for the German international, who has already lost his place in Die Mannschaft to Nico Schlotterbeck, another SC Freiburg defender.
Daniel James
There has been much hype around Dan James who joined Leeds United in a big-money deadline day move from Manchester United. Unfortunately, he is coming on the back of two unsuccessful seasons at Old Trafford, where he has not only failed to showcase his talents but has also appeared very inconsistent with his performances.
There is no doubt that James’ style of play is much better suited to Bielsa’s tactical philosophy. But it won’t be surprising to see the Welshman falter and fail to live up to the expectations at Elland Road this term.
Rodrigo Moreno
Rodrigo Moreno is perhaps the most redundant attacker in the Leeds United setup at the moment. He has remained at Elland Road as the sole competitor for Patrick Bamford, but it is apparent that the Spaniard is not a traditional goalscoring centre-forward.
Not to mention, the former Valencia forward has struggled in the Premier League. It appears his style of play hasn’t suited Bielsa’s philosophy as of yet and the forward might be set for another frustrating campaign, where he will likely struggle with a lack of game-time.
