In a recent report, The Shields Gazette revealed that Newcastle United centre-forward Callum Wilson is facing a spell on the sidelines due to a thigh injury he sustained against Southampton before this international break. It is understood that the Tyneside club have some fears that the English striker could be out of action for a number of weeks.
Wilson’s Growing Injury Concerns At Tyneside
Wilson has made a bright start to this Premier League campaign after banging in two goals in three appearances for Steve Bruce’s team so far. Hence, this recent development will be a bitter pill to swallow for anyone associated with the Tyneside club.
The Coventry-born frontman had a decent debut season at St. James’ Park as he registered 12 goals and five assists in 28 matches for the Magpies in all competitions. Wilson performed well to average 1.9 shots, 0.7 key passes and 1.0 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League. However, the former Bournemouth talent needs to work on improving his accuracy when distributing the ball in the final third after he made 69.5% of his attempted passes in the English top-flight (stats via whoscored).
A hamstring injury kept Wilson out of action for a lot of key games for Newcastle last season. Now there is a real worry that he could be in for another injury-placed campaign at St. James’ Park which won’t bode well for the Magpies.
Wilson Set For A Spell On The Sidelines: Big Blow For The Magpies?
Wilson can use his quickness to get in behind the opposition backline and has transformed himself into a decent finisher in the attacking third of the pitch. He can make some intelligent runs with the ball and is proficient at testing the opponent’s keeper with his shot attempts.
The English marksman can also chip in with a few important assists for his team. However, there are some concerns over his long-term health which is something Newcastle would hope that the striker can overcome when he returns to action for them on the field.
Wilson is currently Newcastle’s best source for goals. Therefore, losing him to injury for a few weeks will be a massive blow for Bruce as the Magpies might struggle to be productive in the final third without someone of the English forward’s experience leading the line for them every week.
