In a recent television segment with Bild, renowned journalist Christian Falk stated that Manchester City are keeping a keen eye on Bayer 04 Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz. Falk said (via Sport Witness),
“Pep Guardiola has sent scouts to Leverkusen time and time again recently to watch him.
“There are, of course, a few others sitting there from Chelsea, United, Arsenal and Liverpool. So many, many Premier League clubs are interested but City very specifically.
“We do know, though, that he’s not in a hurry to move to the Premier League just yet. The young man Florian Wirtz is still developing at Leverkusen, and there have already been talks with FC Bayern, which of course, are only indirect.
“So that’s the responsibility of his father and his advisor. It does seem that Bayern have a very, very good chance of being the next step.”
Wirtz’s Impressive Numbers At The BayArena
Wirtz has made an excellent start to this campaign as he has already been responsible for putting in a string of eye-catching displays for Leverkusen over the past couple of months. The 18-year-old has banged in five goals and grabbed four assists in six matches for the German outfit this season across various competitions.
The Pulheim-born talent has done remarkably well to average 1.4 shots, 2.2 key passes and 1.4 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Bundesliga. He has even been tidy when distributing the ball in the opponent’s half after making 83.3% of his attempted passes in the German first division (stats via whoscored).
Should Man City Launch A Move For Wirtz?
Wirtz can be a delight to watch when he is dribbling with the ball at full swing in the final third. He is usually a hard man to stop for the opposition defenders because of his excellent close control and low centre of gravity.
The German teenager has a good passing range and can set up some clear-cut chances for his teammates to score. He has already added plenty of goals and assists to his game which makes him one of the most promising youngsters in European football.
Man City would be wise to launch a move to bring Wirtz to the Etihad Stadium as he is a star in the making and would add even more quality to Pep Guardiola’s attack.
