In a recent report, Todo Fichajes revealed that Manchester City have identified Benfica forward Darwin Nunez as a replacement for Bernardo Silva. It has been stated that the Mancunian outfit are keeping tabs on the Uruguayan talent with the Portuguese club looking forward to selling him for the right price in the future.
Nunez’s Excellent Form For Benfica This Season
The 22-year-old has made an incredible start to this campaign after he produced a couple of goal-scoring displays as the focal point of the Benfica attack. Nunez has participated in four league matches for the Portuguese giants this season, scoring four goals in the process.
The Uruguay international has done well to find some form following a long injury layoff as he is averaging 2.5 shots and 1.0 dribbles per game in the Liga Bwin. However, he has been quite sloppy with his ball distribution as evidenced by his pass success rate of 67.6% in the top tier of Portuguese football (stats via whoscored).
Nunez’s current contract at the Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica expires in the summer of 2025, so Man City would have to make a sizable offer if they are to convince the Portuguese club to part ways with their prized asset in January or next summer.
Is Nunez The Right Choice For Man City?
Nunez has decent pace under his belt and can make some well-timed runs with the ball in behind the opponent’s backline. He has a good football IQ that helps him create openings for himself to get a few shots in on-target. The four-time Uruguay international has proven himself to be a decent finisher in front of the opposition goal so far this season but still has a lot to learn before he is ready to play at the highest level week in week out.
Nunez will probably add some pace and goals to Pep Guardiola’s frontline. He will undoubtedly be a good signing for Man City in the long run as Guardiola could be the ideal man to get the best out of him at the Etihad Stadium in the coming seasons.
Nunez is a natural centre-forward who will add some serious competition for Gabriel Jesus for the right to lead the line for the Premier League champions over the next few years. All in all, the Benfica youngster will be a decent choice for the Mancunian team as long as they are planning to give him regular game time in the future. However, he won’t be a like-for-like replacement for Bernardo Silva who mainly operates as a wide player or in central midfield.
