As reported by Yorkshire Evening Post, Alfie McCalmont was delighted after playing for Northern Ireland in the ongoing international break. The youngster featured in the qualifying game against Lithuania as a late sub while playing the full ninety minutes, in the friendly against Estonia.
“I loved it. A good win, even though it’s friendly. We just want to keep that winning momentum and hopefully take it into the game against Switzerland.”, said McCalmont.
Alfie McCalmont’s Spell At Leeds So Far
A native of Thirsk, in North Yorkshire, Alfie McCalmont is a local lad who has been with Leeds United since a young age. He has had a rather swift rise to prominence, as far as the youth departments are concerned, and was promoted to the reserve side back in 2018.
But after struggling to make an impact in the U23 setup, McCalmont opted to join Oldham Athletic in a season-long loan deal last summer. A central midfielder by trade, the youngster did reasonably well, scoring eight goals and registering five assists in 35 League 2 matches the last term.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to gain promotion to the senior side. As a result, the 21-year-old was sent to another loan spell this summer, this time to League One outfit Morecambe FC. He has already featured in four games in the league so far and these recent appearances for Northern Ireland have certainly worked in his favour.
Many even expect McCalmont to become one of the rising stars in League One this season, though a lot will depend on how quickly he settles into life at Morecambe FC.
Does He Have Any Future At Leeds United?
Leeds United certainly lack depth in central midfield, especially after a relatively poor performance in the transfer market this term. They have not signed a proper alternative for Kalvin Phillips while Mateusz Klich and Stuart Dallas remain the only viable options in the advanced midfield slots.
It bodes well for McCalmont if he wants to be considered as part of the senior side from next summer. But at the same time, the midfielder has to perform extremely well in order to stand any chance of impressing Marcelo Bielsa, as he is only playing in the third division of English football.
Not to mention, the Whites might spend big on midfielders next summer, after missing out on several top targets this time around. The prospect of Phillips’ potential sale is also looming large, so it could go either way for young McCalmont, whose immediate focus should be on performing well for Morecambe FC this season.
