As reported by football.London, Niklas Sule could be an option for Chelsea next summer. The Blues are actively looking for options in the transfer market as they look to bolster their defensive options amid the uncertainty surrounding the future of Antonio Rudiger. Sule is tipped as a potential candidate to replace Rudiger, with the Bayern Munich defender’s current contract expiring at the end of the season.
Niklas Sule’s Current Status Bayern Munich
Once regarded as one of Germany’s biggest defensive talents, Niklas Sule perhaps hasn’t had the ideal progress he was hoping for since joining Bayern Munich in 2017.
He has featured in 141 competitive appearances for the Bavarians, even winning the treble during the 2019/20 campaign as well as four Bundesliga titles and two DFB Cups. But the German international has had a difficult time dealing with injuries and a lot of competition for places.
In recent years, it has only grown worse, with Bayern Munich bringing in the likes of Benjamin Pavard, Dayot Upamecano and the highly talented Lucas Hernandez. Although Sule remains the first-team starter, he may soon lose his place to Upamecano and Hernandez, who have already made a major impression under Julian Nagelsmann.
Is Sule A Good Option For Chelsea?
Chelsea are in dire need of defensive reinforcements, especially with Rudiger and Thiago Silva’s contracts expiring at the end of the season. Rudiger has already appeared reluctant in signing a new contract and may incidentally end up at Bayern Munich.
Niklas Sule, on that note, might be a decent addition to the side as Thomas Tuchel looks to shore up his options in the defensive unit. The Bayern Munich centre-back has a significant amount of experience at the highest level of football while an imposing 1.95m frame makes him an intimidating presence for the opposition attackers.
Sule is no slouch either and is extremely fast for a centre-back of his height, which combines well with his physical attributes, effectively making him an ideal fit for the English brand of football.
From a sporting perspective, Sule might not be a direct replacement for Rudiger. But he certainly offers additional pace and strength to the table. For a potential free transfer, the German international could indeed be a massive coup for the European champions.
