The midweek outing at Ibrox ended in disappointment for Rangers as they suffered a 2-0 Europa League defeat against Lyon. The French hotshots were the better side, but the outcome this afternoon is a bigger let-down as they fail to defeat Motherwell despite having an early lead via Fashion Sakala’s close-range header. The wastefulness cost them two massive points when Kaiyne Woolery equalized midway through the second half.
Below are the Rangers players rated in their disappointing 1-1 draw against Motherwell.
Allan McGregor: 6
Was not at all tested throughout the game but the only on-target attempt from the visitors ended up into the back of the net. Back to back setbacks for the veteran Scotsman.
James Tavernier: 7
Had an effort saved by outstanding Liam Kelly in the Motherwell goal. Struggled at times at the back, particularly against the away side’s direct play.
Connor Goldson: 6.5
Did the basic right on most occasions with aerial clearances and recoveries. Had some nervy moments against long balls and crosses.
Jack Simpson: 5.5
Not good enough as he should have done a lot better defensively during the equalizer. Rusty with his tackles and lacked the game-reading while dealing with counter-attacking threats.
Borna Barisic: 6.5
Kept on making overlapping runs, whipped in crosses and tried to be more lethal with the final deliveries. Looked lethargic at times while tracking back and stopping crosses.
Steven Davis: 7
Orchestrated the game from the centre of the pitch. Helped the Gers retain possession and kept on causing problems in Motherwell defence. Had a couple of efforts but failed to make any difference before making way for Scott Arfield late in the match.
Glen Kamara: 7.5
Dribbled past the opponents a few times, switched the game to open up space but his final balls lacked accuracy against the Well’s resolute defending.
Joe Aribo: 8.5
Had his attempts off target but set it up for Sakala who found the net early into the game. Offered his creativity from midfield, also his dribbling and directness caused menace in the Motherwell backline.
Scott Wright: 7
A lively first half for the Scot with his pace, flair and swift footwork from the flanks. His finishing was disappointing though as he should have found the net at least once. Made way for Juninno Bacuna with the final quarter remaining.
Fashion Sakala: 8
A flying start for the Zambian who scored his maiden Rangers goal around the 12th-minute mark. Could have scored a few more had he converted the other chances. Was subbed off for Morelos late in the second half.
Kemar Roofe: 7
Missed a great scoring opportunity from inside the box. His runs and dribbles were impressive, but the lack of finishing damaged the Light Blues severely.
Rangers Substitutes Vs Motherwell
Juninho Bacuna: 5.5
Was handed his debut in a difficult situation and the ex-Huddersfield Town midfielder failed to deliver anything spectacular.
Alfredo Morelos: 5.5
Only had a few touches since coming on late in the contest.
Scott Arfield: NA
Played too little to warrant a rating.
