In a recent report, The Telegraph mentioned that Wolverhampton Wanderers have declined a £5m loan bid from Tottenham Hotspur for Adama Traore this month. It is understood that Wolves are unwilling to sell the Spanish speedster with only a few days left to run in this summer transfer window.
Traore’s Inconsistent Season At Wolverhampton
The 25-year-old had a campaign of mixed emotions at the Molineux Stadium as he struggled to be consistent with his productivity deep inside the opponent’s half. Traore was involved in 41 matches for the West Midlands side last season, netting three goals and providing three assists on all fronts.
Despite his lack of consistency in front of the opposition’s goal, the six-time Spain international deserves a lot of credit for averaging 1.2 shots, 1.5 key passes and 4.1 dribbles per game in the 2020-21 Premier League campaign. He even distributed the ball relatively well in the attacking end of the field after he averaged 76.3% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
Traore has also experienced a slow start to this campaign as he has just made three appearances for Wolves but is still waiting to score or pick up an assist this season. However, there is no denying that the Spaniard remains one of the most important members of Bruno Lage’s first team.
Wolves Reject £5m Loan From Spurs For Traore: Did Lage Make The Right Call?
Traore is one of the fastest players in world football and can often beat multiple defenders off the dribble in the final third. He is proficient at getting himself to the byline and can deliver some inviting crosses into the danger area inside the opponent’s penalty box.
The Spanish sensation can play in any position across the frontline. Lage has often used him as a left-sided winger but he can also function on the right flank or serve as a centre-forward up top if required.
The ex-Barcelona youngster has scored and created some vital goals for Wolves over the past couple of seasons. Therefore, Lage simply cannot afford to let a player of his pace and athleticism leave this late in the transfer window as he will hardly have any time to replace him before the transfer deadline on August 31st.
At 25, Traore has still got a lot to offer at the highest level, so Wolves should think about retaining his services beyond this summer. With all things considered, it seems like the West Midlands outfit has made the right call by deciding to reject Tottenham’s £5m loan bid for the Spaniard this month.
