In a recent report, The Athletic offered an update on Manchester City‘s pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane this summer. It has been revealed that the Spurs striker has failed to report back for pre-season training as he is trying to force a move to Man City during this summer transfer period (via The Athletic).
Kane’s Excellent Record At North London Last Season
On a personal front, Kane had another incredible season at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as he maintained an excellent goal-scoring record for the North London outfit. The England international appeared in 49 matches for Spurs in the previous campaign, scoring 33 goals and grabbing 17 assists across multiple competitions.
The London-born frontman was an influential presence in the final third after he averaged 3.9 shots, 1.4 key passes and 1.5 dribbles per game in the 2020-21 Premier League season. However, he was a bit sloppy when interchanging possession in the opposition half as he made just 69.9% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
Kane has continued to prove his worth as the best centre-forward in England, so it makes sense for Man City to try everything they can to secure the services of the Three Lions star ahead of the new season. He is good enough to fill the big shoes left by Sergio Aguero, who decided to join Barcelona earlier this summer.
What Should Be Pep Guardiola’s Play Here?
Kane is a world-class centre-forward who is currently operating at the top of his game. He has a knack for creating a yard of space for himself and is a deadly finisher in front of the opponent’s goal.
The 61-time England international can even contribute by picking up his fair share of assists in the final third. However, he tends to give away the ball cheaply at times, so he might struggle to adjust to Guardiola’s style of possession-based football at the Etihad Stadium.
However, there is no denying that Kane will add plenty of goals and assists to Man City’s frontline if they can snap him up before the transfer window slams shut at the end of this month. The English marksman could fire Man City to another Premier League title and even help them end their long wait for a UEFA Champions League trophy in the upcoming campaign.
Now that the Spurs striker has given a clear indication of his desire to leave by not reporting back to training for Tottenham, it could open the door for the Mancunian giants to seal a move for him during this summer transfer period. Therefore, Guardiola should prioritize on making another big-money offer to get him on board this summer.
