According to Calciomercato, Tottenham have entered the market for Weston McKennie. The Juventus midfielder is facing an uncertain future in Turin following the arrival of Manuel Locatelli while the club is also eyeing a return for Miralem Pjanic. It has put Spurs on red alert, though they are set to face stiff competition from Everton.
Weston McKennie: A Star Of US Soccer
Weston McKennie is considered one of the established stars in the US National team that is still young and growing. A product of the Dallas academy in Texas, the midfielder had initially made his name at Schalke before moving to Juventus in 2020. He joined the club on a loan deal, but the move was made permanent for a fee of €20 million.
During his first season in Italy, the 22-year-old had made 34 appearances for the Bianconeri. He scored five goals while chipping in with two assists, but the poor season from Juventus led to the sacking of Andrea Pirlo. It has now left McKennie in a precarious situation, with new manager Massimiliano Allegri far more interested in the likes of Locatelli and Pjanic.
Nevertheless, McKennie is still regarded as one of the best footballing talents in North America. A central midfielder by trade, the former Schalke prodigy is a very versatile, aggressive and hard-working operator in the middle of the park.
Indeed, the US international can play in a variety of positions, including defensive midfield and even out wide. It goes hand in hand with his tenacity and ability to drive forward with the ball. The youngster is also quite adept in carrying the ball, using his quick feet to drift past the opposing defenders.
A Perfect Option For Tottenham?
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly preparing for a potential midfield overhaul, with Nuno Espirito Santo open to selling the two Frenchmen in Moussa Sissoko and Tanguy Ndombele. It could create a significant void in the middle of the park and that is where someone like Weston McKennie could be an excellent fit.
The 22-year-old offers the dynamism and the work rate that could make him an ideal fit under Nuno’s tactical philosophy. Thanks to his ball-carrying and technical prowess, McKennie may even emerge as an ideal partner for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in Tottenham’s double-pivot.
Alternatively, the US international can play out wide or even in the number ten role, providing competition for the likes of Dele Alli and Giovani Lo Celso. He also boasts substantial experience at the highest level of football, with over 100 combined appearances in Bundesliga and Serie A as well as 24 caps for the USMNT.
Therefore, Weston McKennie can certainly prove to be a smart investment for Tottenham. However, a lot will depend on how much Juventus demand for their American sensation, as the Lilywhites simply cannot afford to break the €25-30 million barrier.
