According to The Sun, as cited by the Independent, Tottenham are in contention to sign Raheem Sterling. The north London giants have emerged as one of the two options, alongside their cross-town rivals Arsenal, for the Manchester City forward. Sterling is yet to make a decision on his future but has a number of options to choose from including a prolonged stay at the Etihad as well.
Raheem Sterling’s Disappointing 2020/21 Campaign
Raheem Sterling was one of the main men for Manchester City heading into the 2020/21 campaign. He was expected to play a key role for the club in their attempts to retake the title from Liverpool.
However, the forward was highly inconsistent, notably scoring just two goals in his first nine Premier League matches. Although the winger still remained a first-team regular for Man City, his performances did not improve.
Soon enough, Sterling fell down the pecking order, especially during the second half of the campaign. He was often overlooked in favour of Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva. He wasn’t involved in the club’s Champions League campaign at all, starting only two matches in the knockout rounds.
The former Liverpool star ended the campaign with ten goals and eight assists in the PL, one of his lowest tallies since joining the Etihad in 2015.
A Revival In Euro 2020
Despite his struggles at Manchester City, Raheem Sterling was considered as a first-team regular for the England national team by Gareth Southgate. The move initially caused a furore among fans, as it came at the expense of other talented and more in-form players like Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford.
However, Sterling proved himself valiantly, emerging as arguably England’s best player with three goals and an assist. His contributions in the final third were critical in helping the Three Lions reach the final of Euro 2020, only to lose to Italy via penalty shootout.
A Massive Coup For Tottenham?
Raheem Sterling’s potential arrival at Tottenham Hotspur should be massive for the club for multiple reasons. With star striker Harry Kane facing an uncertain future at the club, the Englishman could be the ideal man to lead the club forward alongside Son Heung-Min.
With almost 300 appearances in the Premier League, Sterling has the experience and the pedigree at the highest level of football. He isn’t particularly an unrealistic option either, especially following the addition of Jack Grealish that could make it difficult for him to get regular first-team football at Etihad.
At Tottenham, he should immediately become the focal point of the attack, solving the club’s crisis in the right wing-back position where they have lacked quality. And at the age of just 26, Sterling has many years ahead of him, potentially making him a bargain for the Lilywhites this summer.
