Rangers have added three new faces this summer on Bosman to bolster the squad. Steven Gerrard is keen on further reinforcements to defend the Premiership crown but might miss out on Gary Cahill after failing to make it to the group stages of the prestigious Champions League competition, the Scottish Sun reports.
The veteran centre-half was released by Crystal Palace upon the expiration of his Selhurst Park contract. Despite being in his mid-thirties, the ex-Chelsea star is willing to continue amid offers from Norwich City and Bournemouth. The former Three Lions international would have added both experience and expertise in the Gers’ defence, but the lack of transfer fund is blocking any potential move given his high wage expectations north of the border.
Meanwhile, Rangers might listen to offers for their prized assets to balance the books. Their spending spree has been significant ever since Steven Gerrard’s appointment as the Ibrox chief, but the setback of Champions League exit must be dealt with in order to avoid a financial collapse. They are not blessed to splash millions in the market, and therefore, should generate enough money to restore stability in due time.
Why Rangers Should Not Opt For Gary Cahill
The Bears have ample defensive options in their ranks as the likes of Filip Helander, Jack Simpson and Leon Balogun are fighting for a starting status alongside Connor Goldson in the heart of the backline. Nikola Katic, too, is determined to prove his worth following a long injury layoff and the decision of sanctioning George Edmundson’s transfer to Ipswich Town depicts how well equipped they already are in deep defence.
Cahill conquered every major silverware during his Chelsea realm. He spent almost eight years at Stamford bridge and earned cult status with 290 appearances across competitions. The lack of first-team football at the Bridge led to his Palace move a couple of summers ago, but the persistent injury problems refrained him from featuring week in week out last season. He is still strong in the air, great with his positioning and no-nonsense clearances, however, the lack of pace and fitness woes remain a concern due to the congestion of fixtures.
Gerrard banked on the experienced Gareth McAuley back in 2018, but it did not work out for the iconic Northern Irishman who eventually hung up his boots a year later. Cahill’s reputation and quality would have enriched their current stars, but the club is in no position to make luxury signings before the window is slammed shut.
