The Daily Mail has recently reported that Newcastle United have identified Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury as a priority target for this summer transfer window. It is understood that the Magpies boss is keen on bringing the English midfield ace to St. James’ Park before the end of this month.
Choudhury’s Limited Role At The King Power Stadium Last Season
Choudhury played a sporadic role for the East Midlands outfit in the previous campaign but deserves credit for putting in some impressive displays at the heart of Brendan Rodgers’ midfield. The Loughborough-born talent made 22 appearances for Leicester last season, scoring one goal and picking up one assist on all fronts.
The English sensation saw most of his playing minutes come as a substitute, so it is no surprise that he could only average 0.9 tackles, 0.9 interceptions and 0.5 clearances per game in the Premier League and the UEFA Europa League. However, the 23-year-old distributed the ball with conviction after completing 82.3% of his attempted passes in both those competitions (stats via whoscored).
Choudhury can serve as a decent squad player at the highest level but only time will tell whether he is good enough to feature in the Premier League week in week out if the Magpies manage to secure his services during this summer transfer period.
Is Choudhury A Good Option For The Foxes?
Choudhury is a tough-tackling central midfielder who can time his challenges well to secure the ball back for his team. He can commit himself to disrupt the opposition’s flow in the game at the centre of the park. The English talent can even get himself into good positions so that he can clear the danger when needed. Choudhury is a tidy passer of the ball and can engineer some decent plays for others around him when he is playing well on the pitch.
The Leicester squad player could be tempted with a chance to join Newcastle where he would have a far better shot at earning regular first-team starts over the next 12 months. Choudhury has what it takes to rival Jonjo Shelvey and Sean Longstaff for a place in Steve Bruce’s starting XI.
We can expect the Englishman to add some bite and steel to the Magpies’ midfield department. At 23, he has still got a lot of time to establish himself as a valuable contributor in top-flight football. With all things considered, Choudhury will be a good option for the Tyneside club to pursue before the transfer window closes at the end of this month.
